5 Ways To Grow Your Business in 2016
Each new year, I get more excited about what our team is doing – but this year I am especially excited. Last year, we rampped up our digital marketing offerings by bringing on the talented Jess Flack and we also expanded our development team.
As our clients go through their business plans for 2016, there is one question we keep being asked: “What should we do differently this year to increase online sales?” Well, here are 5 things you can do starting today!
Review Your Website
I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of this… 4 months go by since you’ve updated some pages on your site and you get an email from a friend or client telling you about a broken link or typo on your site. EMBARRASSING! How many people have seen that typo? How long has that broken link been there?
Take some time this week to go through your site page by page. Does the copy still tell the story you want to tell? Are their any broken links or images? Do your team images need to be updated? Make a list of all changes that need to be made and start 2016 with a clean slate.
Stop Confusing Action with Progress
This is a big one. Right out of college, I cut my teeth working in campaign management for local and national politics. I often think about an event I attended where a congressman was speaking to a large crowd. He said, “they call us a ‘do-nothing’ congress, but we have passed over bills this year!” To which, the crowd went wild.
What were those bills? What did they do? How did they move the country forward? There was no mention of this. The congressman and the hyped up crowd were confusing action with progress.
Are you doing the same things? Posting to your Facebook page, writing a bunch of blog posts, sending out newsletters… all of these are great lead generation tools. But how many sales did you get from these activities? The key is to look at ROI, see what’s working, and cut the rest. Ask yourself, “what are these things accomplishing?” If that’s a hard question to answer, then it’s likely time to reevaluate your marketing efforts. Work smart, not hard.
Pay Attention to Social Media
I’ve had several clients tell me that social media is just something their client base doesn’t use.
Well, as of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (according to pewinternet.org). So, do your potential clients use Facebook? Almost guaranteed. Should every industry put 90% of their marketing dollars into social media? No. But you also shouldn’t ignore the potential opportunities on all social media platforms.
Make Sure Your Site is Mobile
Is your site mobile friendly? If not, you are losing a TON of potential traffic and sales. We reviewed over 100 client websites and saw that over 30% of web traffic is now through a mobile device. This means if you get 10k views a month, THREE THOUSAND of your users are going to find your site unusable.
If we assume that only 1% of those users would becoming clients, that is 30 customers you are losing a month. What is that worth to you?
If you are still using the phone book, you might be a lost cause 😉 But, you’re in luck because online advertising has never been more accessible, effective, or (most importantly) quantifiable.
There are SO MANY channels you can use for online advertising and so many ways to target a potential client. You can do retargeting ads, social media ads, search engine ads, display ads on almost any website, email marketing… the possibilities are endless.
Not only that, but you can quantify every single channel by tracking conversions per ad. At the end of each month, you can see which ads are working, which channels are effective, and then trim the fat.
I’m sure you have a lot more you need to do this year to move your business forward, but this is a great start to transform your online presence. If there is anything we can do to help, feel free to hit us up!
