#MTT Northside Neighborhood House: My Town Tuesday

My Town Tuesday is our ongoing summer series that highlights nonprofits in the Chattanooga area.

This week, I spoke with Brianne Lalor, Chief Development Officer of Northside Neighborhood House in Chattanooga. She shared

Northside Neighborhood House is a nonprofit that serves the areas of Chattanooga north of the River–Hixson, Red Bank, and Soddy Daisy, among other areas. The nonprofit focuses on rural poverty that occurs outside of Chattanooga’s urban core.

One of Northside Neighborhood House’s top priorities is direct assistance. They provide help with utility payments, prescriptions, and food, among other things.

But the good work doesn’t stop there.

Northside Neighborhood House focuses on following up with the people they assist. They help people to set short and long-term goals and help out with anything from computer classes to resume writing.

“We’re all about providing a hand up through direct assistance and education,” Lalor said. “Some people are stuck in a cyclical poverty, and our goal is to help them out. We want to move them to self-sufficiency.”

Northside Neighborhood House started in 1924 when a group of women noticed the poverty in Chattanooga and began teaching those in need how to quilt. Now, those lessons extend to cooking classes, adult GED programs, and Family Dinner Nights.

“We want those we serve to leave our doors with the resources to feel empowered to take charge and change their circumstances.” Lalor said.
