Tech watch: Are you paying attention to the right trends?

Consumer technology is moving at a faster rate than ever before. Moreover, these innovations have changed —and are continuing to change — the way businesses market to consumers.

Technology trends involving mobile phones, voice command devices, and intelligent personal assistants, transform the way businesses are engaging with consumers because they have to in order to remain relevant. Digital marketing is quite literally making traditional marketing methods obsolete.

Today, technology and marketing go hand-in-hand. Consider the Wal-Mart app. Now, not only does a shopper receive notice of the deals at their local store, they are guaranteed the lowest price thanks to Wal-Mart’s Savings Catcher feature. Their pitch is convenience combined with savings: You don’t have to spend time and energy hunting down the lowest prices, Wal-Mart will do it for you. Simply shop at Wal-Mart, then scan your receipt into their app. Three days later, if any local stores have a lower price, Wal-Mart will give you a credit you can use on a future purchase.

But the consumer isn’t the only winner. In using this technology, Wal-Mart collects the shopping habits and preferences of any consumer that uses this feature. They can then send highly targeted messaging to individuals based on current favorite items, interests, goals, and more. Imagine someone trying to eat healthier. They’ve made the switch from their previous pattern of buying mostly packaged food to fruits, veggies, protein powders, and more. Through the app, Wal-Mart can see this. And they will absolutely send you different recommendations and deals because of it. Moreover, their combined data collections can help them better predict and anticipate overall consumer trends.

While no one can predict which technology trends will take off and which will fall flat, there are several you need to know:

Top 3 technology trends impacting marketing

1. Behavioral Email Marketing – Is email marketing dead? No, it is being transformed. The trend in recent years is to send much more personalized and targeted email marketing using gathered big data. Behavioral email marketing automatically sends targeted emails to your customers based on their interactions with your business across any number of platforms, including your website, social media, or app.

2. Internet of Things (IoT) Marketing – This is likely the most impactful trend in recent years, but it is still in its very early stages. For instance, check out Domino’s Pizza and their various IoT marketing apps. Whether it is using the Amazon Echo or an app on a smart television, customers can easily make a pizza order and track its progress in real-time. By 2020, projections expect there could be 75 billion internet connected devices, which represent a huge possibility to keep ordering opportunities always at the consumer’s fingertips.

3. Wearables – Whether we are talking about smart watches, fitness trackers, embedded clothing, or other devices, wearables are presenting a whole new way to grab the attention of potential customers. Moreover, virtual reality and alternate reality devices are creating new worlds for customers to explore and for your business to create content. It is a whole new way to consume media.
